A variety of assessment tools are used to determine a child's strengths and weaknesses in the areas of speech, language, or literacy. The assessment will include a parent interview, formal standardized measures, informal observations, and behavioral observations.
Based on the concerns of the parent and/or person making the referral for evaluation, the assessments can look at:
Language comprehension: understanding linguistic concepts and complex sentences, following directions
Expressive language: use of grammar and syntax, complex sentences, vocabulary
Literacy: to detect the presence of a learning disorder or dyslexia
Articulation of speech sounds
Following the evaluation, a comprehensive report will be written and shared with the parents. It will summarize the results and outline recommendations for moving forward.
